Sergeant Major Tim Thiede, U.S. Army (Retired), passed away peacefully on July 20, 2025, at the age of 68, surrounded by family and loved ones. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and soldier, he lived a life marked by unwavering dedication to his country, his family, and his values.

Born on December 1, 1956, in Odebolt, IA, Tim answered the call to serve and began his military career in 1975. Over 21 years of honorable service, he rose through the ranks to become a Sergeant Major – the highest enlisted rank in the U.S. Army – a testament to his exceptional leadership, discipline, and character.

Throughout his career, he served with distinction in numerous posts both stateside and abroad, including a deployment to Kuwait during Desert Strom Jan ’91 to May ’91 where he received the Bronze star w/Valor for his unwavering courage and service to his country. During his military career he was stationed in Berlin, Ft. Knox, KY, Ansbach, Germany, Ft. Riley, KS, Ft. Bliss, TX and Gowen Field in Boise, ID. He was known for his quiet strength, sharp insight, and steadfast commitment to the well-being of his soldiers. To those who served alongside him, he was not only a mentor and leader, but a brother in arms.

After retiring from active duty, Sergeant Major Thiede continued to serve his community as a JROTC instructor in Boise, ID where he helped guide and educate his students for over 23 years. He spent many years volunteering at Veterans Day Parades, Memorial Day ceremonies, Rake up Boise, and other community outreach programs. His sense of duty never waned.

Tim loved spending time at home and the outdoors with his family and friends. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and boating along with watching his favorite sports teams, The Bears, the Cubs and The Boise State Broncos. His favorite game of the year was the Army/Navy game. Go Army! Beat Navy!

At the heart of his life was his family. He was married to his beloved wife, Roxanne, for 42 years. He was a pillar of strength and love for his children, grandchildren, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. His calm presence, wisdom, and unwavering integrity left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

He will be deeply missed by all who were touched by his life, his service, and his example.

He is survived by his wife, Roxanne; his 3 sons, Danny Thiede (Jazzmin-wife, daughters-Dalilah, Adelle, Ruby), Jeremy Thiede (daughter-Kelly), Christopher Thiede (Megan-wife, kids-Mikaela, Nikolas, Cuvney). He is preceded in death by his parents – Clement and Janice Thiede.

A memorial service will be held on August 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest with full military honors at The Idaho State Veterans Cemetery-10100 N. Horseshoe Bend Rd., Boise, ID 83714.
