Sue Ann Marie Fleming Edstrom was born on October 1, 1946, in Alton, Illinois, to Lee and Eileen Fleming. She was the third of four children. In 1953, the family moved to Englewood, Colorado, where Sue spent the rest of her childhood. After graduating from Englewood High School, she attended Colorado State University and earned a B.A. in Social Work.
Sue met her husband, Dale, during high school, and their relationship blossomed at CSU. They were married in June 1968 and began their life together in Rapid City, South Dakota, where they welcomed two children, Erica in 1971 and Andy in 1973. In 1976, the family moved to Sandpoint, Idaho, and then settled in Boise in 1978, which remained home for the rest of Sue’s life.
Sue dedicated her career to serving others as a social worker for the American Red Cross. She held the role of Director of Disasters and Services to Military Families for many years, providing compassion and support to those facing crisis.
A woman of deep Christian faith, Sue poured her heart into ministries that reflected her love for God and others. She had a beautiful singing voice and a passion for music, which she shared alongside Dale in the Redeemer Lutheran church choir and at Walk to Emmaus retreats. At Vineyard Boise, she helped lead worship for small groups, offering her gifts humbly and joyfully.
In the 1990s, she served as a counselor at Camp Sawtooth, delighting in the chance to connect with campers and embrace the beauty of the outdoors. Sue and Dale also took part in clown worship, local prayer groups, and international mission trips to Ecuador and Paraguay.
In 2014, Sue was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Though the illness slowly took many of the things she loved—singing, playing guitar, hiking—her faith and spirit remained resilient. Even in her final years, she radiated grace and courage. Sue often said that her heavenly mansion would be an alpine meadow—and now, we rejoice knowing she is free at last, dancing and singing again.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Dale. Sue is survived by her daughter, Erica Kimberly Edstrom; her son, Andrew Carl Edstrom (Matt Mayer); her beloved grandchildren, Ella, Josiah, and Eden Haugli; and her siblings, Tom Fleming (Anita), Patricia Fleming Hamilton (Jack), and Michael Fleming (Gabrielle), and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vineyard Boise, 4950 Bradley, Garden City, Idaho 83714 or Stanton Health Care, 3684 N Harbor Ln Boise, ID 83703.
