In Fond and Loving Memory of

COL Stephen H Young, USA, Ret.

January 20, 1944 – May 4, 2026

Stephen H Young passed away peacefully, into the arms of his Savior, on Monday, May 4th . He lived a full life of adventure as an accomplished professional engineer, Army officer, woodturner, and family man.

He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years Barbara Ann (Sewell) Young, his son Stuart and daughter in-law Melinda of Burke, VA, and daughter Camille (Ayers) and son in-law Raymond of Boise, ID. He was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren, Kristopher Young and his wife Gabby (Erestain) of Manassas, VA, Anneliese Ayers of Boise, ID, Matthew Young and his wife Julia (Donlon) of Richmond, VA, Nate Ayers of Boise, ID, Troy Young and his wife Kelli of Omaha, NE, and Mia Young of Burke, VA. He was the proud great grandfather of Luke Alexander Young of Omaha, NE. Steve is also survived by his sister Mary (Martin) and brother in-law Steve of Colorado Springs, CO.

Born in Nampa, ID in 1944, Steve Young was the oldest son of Harry Lloyd Young and Beulah (Wright) Young, both preceding him in death. Steve grew up in Boise and attended Borah High School before heading to Moscow, ID to attend the University of Idaho where he majored in Civil Engineering. This is where he also met another Vandal, Barbara, who loved to play chess with Steve. Steve was a cadet in the ROTC program, following in the footsteps of his dad, Lloyd, who served in World War II. Upon graduating from U of I, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers and began his 26-year career in the Army. Steve qualified as an Army Ranger, received a master’s degree in civil engineering from Arizona State, served as a Combat Engineer, and ultimately attained the rank of Colonel.

After over 20 moves around the world, including a tour in Vietnam, Steve concluded his military career and settled back in Boise with his wife, Barbara, in 1993. Once back in Boise, Steve pursued his hobbies in earnest; woodturning, collecting antique tools, and playing golf. He and Barbara were active members of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, where Steve was happy to serve his Lord by helping make the church grounds beautiful.

Steve loved woodworking and spending most of his time with friends and fellow craftsmen at Woodcraft. He shared his skills, mentoring other craftsmen, and found great joy teaching wood turning to his grandchildren. He combined his love of woodworking and his service to our country in his passion for the annual “Turn for the Troops.”

A funeral service will be held at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, Boise, ID on Monday, May 18th, at 10am followed by a graveside committal service with full military honors at Dry Creek Cemetery at 1pm.
