Rosalie H. Awong, affectionately known as Rosie, passed away peacefully at her home in Boise, Idaho, on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the age of 80. She was born on February 24, 1945, in Boise, to Mary Love and Arthur Spesinger.
Rosie’s life was a beautiful journey of compassion, resilience, and service. After graduating from high school in Seattle, Washington, she followed her heart to Hawaii, seeking new experiences and a fresh start. There, she attended Hawaii Business College and embraced the vibrant culture and spirit of Aloha. During this time, she welcomed her three beloved children: Gehrig, Garth, and Ginger.
Rosie’s heart was always drawn to those in need. As the director of WRAC in Hawaii, she tirelessly advocated for individuals and families—helping them secure affordable housing, navigate welfare programs, and find hope during difficult times. Her empathy was boundless, and her impact was immeasurable.
On November 22, 1980, Rosie married the love of her life, John Awong Jr. Together, they moved to Boise in 1982, where she continued her mission of service. She dedicated many years to Friends of Children and Families, where she poured her heart into supporting children and families. Rosie’s work did not go unnoticed—she was honored as a National Head Start Employee of the Year and celebrated in Nashville for her remarkable contributions. Along the way, she built lasting friendships with colleagues who became like family.
Rosie had a deep and abiding love for her family and was the heart of every gathering. Her laughter, warmth, and unwavering strength will be cherished by all who knew her. She is survived by her children: Gehrig (Bonnie) Stone-Awong, Garth Stone, Charlotte (Neal) Caballero, and Ginger (Yancy) Memmott; her sister, Patricia Ramey; and her brother, Robert Love. She also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her extended ‘Ohana—from both the Stone and Awong families—who will miss her dearly.
She is now reunited with her beloved husband, John Awong Jr., and their children, Waynard Awong, Alston Awong, and Johnelle Awong. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Jeanne Cowden; brother, William Love; and her parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Rosie’s memory to:
