Robin Holmquist

Robin Emanuel Holmquist (70) of Grand View, ID, died peacefully at home on April 13, 2024 after battling cancer.  Robin was born in Kalispell, MT, in 1954, the sixth of nine children.  In Montana, he grew up loving the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, working on tractors, boating, swimming, and helping with the family garden.  He trusted in Jesus as his savior at a young age while attending church in Kalispell and his faith sustained him throughout his life. After graduating from high school, he went to Northwest Nazarene College and graduated with a degree in Biology.  While there, he met and married Barbara (Olsson - deceased).  They had two children - Jenifer (Byron) Haley of Pingree, ID, and Jonathan Holmquist of Boise, ID.

Robin’s versatile background allowed him to be flexible with job opportunities - he worked as a welder, climbed gigantic radio towers all over the country, worked with animal nutrition in feedlots and mills, and settled in a career as a wildlife biologist with the Idaho Department of Fish & Game.  He also shared his love of the outdoors with his kids; enjoying fishing, camping, cutting firewood, riding motorcycles, and horseback riding with them.  He volunteered for Caravan scouting activities, took his kids classes on guided nature trips, and later volunteered working with kids in AWANA.  His heart’s intent was to always teach from his vast experience, and pass his skills and faith on to other people.

In 2005, he met Terese Williams Thompson of Boise, ID at church, and they were later married.  Robin was transferred in early 2007 to Grand View, ID where he became the wildlife biologist of the CJ Strike Wildlife Management Area.  Robin recruited his wife as an official IDFG volunteer where he was able to do what he loved, with the one he loved.  In his retirement years, he enjoyed everything: hunting, auctions, machining, auctions, farming, auctions, antique farm equipment, and more auctions.

Robin was definitely a people person and a true friend of everyone, especially children.  He was, after all, a big kid!  His grandchildren were no different – he adored them all:  Andrew, Kayla, and Dominik (Jenifer & Byron), Mia and Savannah (Jonathan), Skye and Rayne (Scott & Maki of Stafford, VA), and Hagen and Hazel (Brian & Nicole of Boise, ID).  Teaching them all facets of wildlife, baking oatmeal cookies, decorating their own birthday cakes & bowls of cream of wheat, fishing, paddle boarding and swimming at CJ Strike Dam, playing games, and much more – while through it all teaching them to love Jesus.

Most importantly, Robin, as a man after God’s own heart, served as an elder, children’s Sunday school teacher, men’s Bible study leader, an AWANA volunteer, and led his church in the Lord’s Supper.  He faithfully attended church, prayer times, and Bible studies - never because he ‘had to’, but truly because he loved to!  He wanted everyone to know the Jesus he knew, loved and served.  In the end, that was his heart’s desire.

Robin is survived by his wife, Terese Holmquist of Grand View, ID; brothers Joe and Jim (Karen) Holmquist of Kalispell, MT; Dave (Rhonda) Holmquist of Cheyenne, WY; sisters Bonnie Hanson and Wendy Holmquist of Kalispell, MT; brother-in-law Tom Ferro; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara Holmquist; his parents Patricia and Theodore Holmquist; brothers Don and Ted Holmquist; and sister Diane DuMontier.

A memorial service will be held at Valley Christian Fellowship in Grand View, ID on Friday, April 26, at 11:00am.  Family and friends will meet afterwards for a time of food and fellowship.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Robin’s favorite local Christian news and programming station:  The Dove Media Inc., 2070 Milligan Way, Medford, OR 97504.
