In the early hours of November 14th, Robert “Bob” Stanton passed away peacefully in his sleep. Over the past several months loved ones had been close by caring and spending time with Bob to reminisce about fishing trips, golf games, and holidays spent together. Bob was born to Wes and Mabel Stanton on June 18th, 1938, here in Boise, Idaho. Bob grew up in the neighborhood near the Boise State University campus. Bob attended school in Boise, where he graduated from Boise High. Going on to attend Boise Jr. College in 1956, where he walked on to try out for the football team and was selected to play quarterback and was even able to kick field goals for the team. He loved attending Boise Jr. College and was active in many clubs and very proud of his time playing for his college team. During his retirement years living back in Boise, he enjoyed his season tickets to Bronco football games for which he dressed in his blue and orange and took turns taking his grandkids along, where they created the most treasured memories!
Anyone who knew Bob knew he spent over 42 years working for Intermountain Gas Company, IGC. He made lifelong connections throughout Idaho, and he had the highest esteem for his teammates, colleagues, and customers. He was blessed to work with classmates from Boise High and Boise Jr. College, while working at IGC. He spent years working in Southern Idaho both in Western and Eastern Idaho with IGC. He fished, camped, barbequed, and golfed with many wonderful folks from IGC over the years. The people at IGC were like family to Bob.
Bob was also civic minded and lived for supporting community efforts. He held leadership positions first in Nampa, Idaho with the Nampa Optimist Club and Nampa High Booster Club. Then he was transferred to Pocatello, Idaho, where he continued to connect with local business partners as the President of the Bengal Boosters at Idaho State University, a Member of the Rotary Club and Pocatello Chamber of Commerce. He held state positions as well working on the Board of Directors for Economics America and being appointed to the State Board of Health and Welfare. In these positions he worked for fairness, safety, and assuring families access to better healthcare and education.
Most of all Bob was a family man. He always cooked up family meals at the grill, enjoyed visits from extended family, and made a tee-time for the group to roll out their clubs and walk the greens. When he and his wife Gloria were blessed with grandchildren, Bob couldn’t wait to get out the plastic bat and ball. Each grandchild remembers his coaching and those words, “Hands hit the ball!” Many a game the grandkids would hear the loudest cheers in the stands from Grandpa Bob, also known as “Pa”! Whether win or lose the after-game time always wrapped up with ice cream! Grandpa traveled out of town for games, helped with moves to college, and eventually attended out of state weddings for his grandkids! If they had an event- he was there to cheer them on!
Bob attended the United Methodist Church, and he belonged to the men’s group. He led the way when it was time to raise funds, and he especially enjoyed Christmas Eve service with friends and family. He shared his love for the Lord by setting an example. He was a very generous man. Bob was the “Santa” of the family. He was the shopper and wrapper for us all! The grandkids lived for “Black Friday Shopping” with Grandpa! He would set the time, pick them up, hit the sales and end with breakfast- his favorite meal of the day!!
Bob’s spirit of giving, loving thy neighbor, and spending time with friends and family are his legacy to us all. His newest great grandson, Logan Robert, entered the world as he was getting ready for his most important journey. He was able to meet his namesake, and he will be grateful to the rest of us for sharing his life story with our newest member. A life well lived that touched so many!
