Mary Agnes Jones

Mary Agnes Jones, much loved wife and mother, died peacefully at home on February 1, 2016 at the age of 90. A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 811 S. Latah Street, Boise on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. A luncheon will be served afterward in the church hall for those attending the service.

Mary was born December 28, 1925 in Kenilworth, Utah, the youngest of three children of Martin and Josephine Ahlin who came to America from the part of Austria now known as Slovenia. Mary graduated with high honors from Carbon County Senior High where she was also active in tennis and swimming.

Mary met the love of her life, Vern August Jones, at a movie theater. Both agreed it was love at first sight. They were married on June 11, 1944 in Helper, Utah. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1994, one year before Vern died. Mary and Vern had three daughters while living in Utah and Colorado, whom they taught their great love of the outdoors. In addition to camping, fishing and pheasant hunting, Mary knew how to garden, can preserves, crochet, sew, sing, dance, bowl, golf and play bridge. She knew how to have fun and she always welcomed others to join her.

When the family moved to Idaho in 1953, Mary began working as a part-time bookkeeper. Over the years she advanced into secretarial, junior accounting and payroll accounting positions. She retired from Ore-Idaho Foods in 1986. After retirement, she devoted many volunteer hours at her church, St. Luke’s Hospital, Elk’s Rehab, and the Veterans Home. She even took up the accordion when she was 65. Always ready with her beautiful smile and willingness to help wherever needed, she made friends over the years with whom she remained in touch. She moved into the Hillcrest Assisted Living Apartments in 2013 where she built a new network of friends and became quite a fan of bingo, book club, and anything musical.

She is survived by daughter, Ginger Walmsley and her husband, Joe; daughter, Susan Thomas and her partner, Marty Anderson; daughter, Sharon Becker and her husband, Ted; granddaughter, Angela Lowman; grandson, Phil Becker and family; grandson, Eric Becker and family. She has four great-grandchildren and eleven nieces and nephews.

Mary’s daughters send special thanks to the staff of Hillcrest Assisted Living in Boise for the excellent loving care.
