Lorayne Clayton

Lorayne Clayton went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ Sunday, Feb. 20 at a local care center in Boise. She was born on June 17, 1919 to Thomas and Blanche Phipps, in Shambaugh, Iowa. She had two older brothers, and three younger sisters. Lorayne’s school years were spent in Shambaugh, College Springs, and Clarinda, IA, graduating from high school in Pillager, MN in 1936. Her love for learning took her to junior college for two years in Clarinda, IA, and her last two years at Simpson College where she graduated in 1942. Her teaching career began in Boxholm, IA in the fall of 1942.

She married Gaylan Clayton in 1946 and they had a son, Philip, and a daughter, Rebecca. The family lived in Iowa, So California, Brookings, OR, and Happy Camp, CA. She moved to Antioch, CA in 1956 after her divorce. There she raised her children and taught senior and junior high students until she retired in 1988. Lorayne was involved in family, church, school and community activities her whole life. She moved to Boise in 2002 to be near her daughter and family.

Lorayne loved learning and traveling and was so fortunate to travel to six of the seven continents from the mid 70’s to the late 90’s. She had wonderful memories, pictures, and artifacts from the many places she’d been.

Lorayne is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Grace Johnson, Phyllis Cronin and their families, her daughter, Rebecca Best, son-¬in-law, Michael Best, and two grandsons, Spencer Powell and Phillip Clayton.

We would like to thank the staff at Boise Samaritan Village for the wonderful, loving care they gave Lorayne while she was there. Thank you also to St. Luke’s hospice for their care the last week of her life.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Abundant Life Baptist Church building fund.

A viewing will be held, today, Thursday, February24, 2011, from 4-7 p.m., at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, Boise.
