John Elton Mooney Sr.

John Elton Mooney, Sr. passed away peacefully in Boise, Idaho on July 22, 2026, surrounded by the love of the family he built over nearly nine decades of a life well lived.

John was born on March 9, 1937, in Klamath Falls, Oregon, the middle of three boys raised by Gertrude and Elton Mooney in Prineville and Portland. It was at Cleveland High School in Portland that a young John met the girl who would become his wife of 67 years. John and Margaret Arlean Flood were married at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Portland on September 6, 1958, beginning a remarkable and loving partnership.

The newlyweds headed to the Bay Area, where John completed his degree in Business Commerce at Santa Clara University, before returning home to Oregon to begin what would become a 37-year career with Pacific Power and Light (later PacifiCorp). He started as an office clerk in Coos Bay, and through steady dedication and hard-earned promotions, the family followed his rise across the rural Northwest — Roseburg, Junction City, Cottage Grove, Madras, back to Junction City, Grants Pass, Klamath Falls, Yakima, and Portland headquarters — before John finally reached Salt Lake City, where he was named Executive Vice-President and later President of Utah Power. John retired from corporate leadership in 1997 and returned home to Central Oregon for many years before relocating to Boise in 2014.

Wherever the company sent them, John and Margaret turned a new town into a home. Together they raised five children amid that adventurous, ever-moving life, and at every stop along the way they gathered lifelong friendships that endured long after the moving trucks pulled away.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret; his children John Jr. (Kelly), Mary (Tim),

Mike (Susan), Karen, and Tim; 10 grandchildren — Aly, Stephanie, Carly, Lane, Cameron, Matthew, Kendall, Michaela, Thomas, and Anna; and 11 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him tremendous joy. He was the last surviving son of Elton and Gertrude Mooney, and leaves behind 18 nieces and nephews, the children of his brothers Frank and Jim Mooney and sister-in-law Sharleen Hyde of Vancouver, WA.

Faith and community were at the center of John’s life. He was active in his Catholic parish at every stop of his career, and he had a quiet gift for mentoring and befriending the coworkers who crossed his path — many of whom remained close friends for life. He carried his love of golf, first discovered on the Santa Clara University golf team, all the way to his final year, still enjoying the game and the company of his golf partners. He proudly shot his age at 66, a feat that captured both his skill and his spirit. In 1978, his community elected him mayor of Junction City, though a corporate transfer to Grants Pass meant he never got to serve the term — one of the few times life’s next chapter arrived before he was ready for it.

More than anything, John relished the people around him — long family gatherings, entire days spent at the game table with the people he loved most, and the easy laughter that came with both. And to his family, he will always be remembered for one gloriously specific talent — his gift-wrapping was unmatched, right down to the last ribbon.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Boise on Monday, August 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Rosary will precede the Mass at 10:15 a.m. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, October 1 at 3:00 pm. at Juniper Golf Club.
