John was born on May 23, 1936, at Spangler Hospital, in Spangler, Pennsylvania, to Desmond and Ruth Lamont. He was raised in Bakerton, Pennsylvania and graduated from John Carroll High School in May 1954.
While attending high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve and joined the Air Force in June 1954. He served in the Air Force for a total of 20 years, retiring in July of 1974 with the rank of Master Sergeant.
John joined the military straight out of high school. Lamont always wanted to be an aircraft mechanic. When he enlisted, he went to boot camp at Sampson Air Force Base, New York, and that was June, July, and August 1954. When he got out of boot camp, he went to Amarillo, Texas, for aircraft mechanic school. Lamont got out in December 1954 and sailed on the USS General HW Butner to England in January 1955. His first tour of duty was in England. Lamont worked on F-86s and T-33 aircraft. He worked there for three years, got transferred to Southern England, and was stationed there in Southern England for six months. After six months, Lamont went to North Africa to a base there. He was there for six months, came back to his base in Southern England, and then went back to the United States. He was stationed at Lockbourne, Ohio. For one year, he worked on B-47s. They had jet aircraft there. He went back to England for four more years, and he was stationed in Upper Heyford. Lamont worked on B-47s the whole time he was in England. Lamont retired on July 1, 1974. He went to work for the post office. He worked for them for 23 years as a letter carrier. He retired from the post office in 1997.
During his early career in England, he married and had 3 daughters who were raised in England. He is also survived by 4 stepchildren.
He also volunteered at the VA in Boise, Idaho for 26 years. His favorite hobbies include fly fishing, golfing, and watching Boise Hawks baseball games. He was also an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He ushered at the Sunday evening mass at Sacred Heart for several years.
He received two presidential awards for his volunteer work, one from President George Bush Jr in 2004, the other from President Barack Obama in 2010 for his work at the VA Hospital. He received the Spirit of Freedom Award for his volunteer work in the community from Senator Mike Crapo in 2011 at the Veterans Home Ceremony.
He is survived by Leonor Lamont who resides in Boise, Idaho.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A committal service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery.
