He received an honorable discharge and continued working on the ranch.

Jim was attending business school when he started working for the State of Idaho, Liquor Dispensary, in June of 1964, as a stock clerk. By November of 1964, he became a Store Manager and in the spring of 1965, he was promoted to District Supervisor in north Idaho. He continued to work his way upward within the Liquor Dispensary. He returned to Boise in 1968 as the Purchasing and Pricing Administrator, and advanced to the Office Manager position in 1972. Jim loved life. He would do anything for anyone, at any time without thought of his personal inconvenience or discomfort. Jim helped many people over the years. He was a good mechanic, good with home repairs, and always there if called upon for any reason.

Jim was an outdoorsman. He enjoyed the land and fresh air. He was a pilot, loved the freedom of flying his own plane and felt the same while riding horses. Round-up was a time he enjoyed. His outdoor activities included hunting, boating, skiing, river-rafting, snowmobiling, camping, Alaska fishing trips with his buddies, BSU games, gardening and of course traveling in his motor-home.
