Georgeanne Moncrief

February 26, 1928 — June 9, 2026

Nampa

Georgeanne Hedges Moncrief, born Sunday, February 26, 1928, in Ogden, Utah, passed peacefully at her home in Nampa, Idaho, on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. Her faith was in God.

She was the daughter of Horace E. and Lillian R. Hedges. They developed Georgeanne’s love and respect for family, nature, and sports. Her father was a four letter high school athlete from Park City, Utah, who added an indoor basketball court/gym to their home. She and her siblings had a trapeze, punching bag, ping pong table, and hoop to enjoy for hours every day. Their highly active lifestyle also found them on the tennis courts in the park across the street and on many trips into the mountains. She remembered Pine View Dam in Ogden Canyon being built and the trips to see the progress of filling the reservoir. For many occasions from then on, summers were spent there swimming and boating. Helping to pass on access to the outdoors to the public, as a U.S. Forest Service employee, her father, worked with others to obtain permits to create Snow Basin where the family thereafter also enjoyed skiing.

After graduating from Weber College, she married Lester J. Moncrief, a builder. Lester’s father also worked for the U.S. Forest Service. Together, Georgeanne and Lester and their three children, created many memories enjoying the outdoors. There were scores of trips including picnicking, fishing, camping, and sightseeing through the National Parks. Again making access to recreation for others, she supported her family creating an aviation focused recreational community, Sunrise Skypark, along the Snake River to the west of Boise, Idaho.

Her main focus and joy were her children whom she championed and encouraged with their own daily creative projects. From building tote-goats, giving model train rides to hamsters, adding an aerial tram through the living room and making cotton candy and Creepy Crawlers, she provided and fostered an enriching environment. She was there offering sandwiches for the 2:00 AM college test cramming, sewing the perfect school dress, or jumping into the Snake River to save a drowning puppy and so much more. She wants it known that she had continued joy and inspiration from her children every day of her life.

Georgeanne adored her grandchildren and was grateful for her daughters-in-law and the loving care they still give to their husbands and children and their kindness to her.

Georgeanne retained her humor and wit. Shortly before passing, she had finished a sandwich. Her daughter asked if she wanted anything else. Without missing a beat, Georgeanne said, “I guess it’s too late to decide on a career, so what do you have for dessert?”

Surviving Georgeanne and raising their glasses -- “To Mom, To Georgeanne, and her new career!”-- are her sons and daughter and their families, and sister, Margot Smelzer along with her broader extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, her sister, Maxine Bernhisel, and her brother, Dr. Ward Hedges.

A private memorial will be held.
