Gary Tryer Riley, 64, was born Dec. 6, 1946 in Orlando, Fla., and died Feb. 24, 2011, at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, in Boise, Id.

A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, March 3 at 1:30 p.m. in the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, Boise. The service will be followed by his interment at the Veterans Cemetery at 3 p.m. where he will receive full military honors.

He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War who served from 1965 to 1976 in the U.S. Air Force as a meteorologist specializing in severe weather forecasting and came to Boise for work as Senior Meteorologist at Idaho Power, a venture lasting seven years. He has worked as Chief Meteorologist and Senior Meteorologist and Deputy Project Manager for the Greek National Hail Suppression Project for five years; Vice President and Chief Atmospheric Scientist of Atmospherics Inc., Fresno, Calif., for 11 years; and Founder of Global Weather Connection.

He earned a Master of Science degree in Atmospheric Science at the University of New York at Albany in December 1984. He earned his Bachelor of Science, Summa Cum Laude, in physics and mathematics from Longwood University, Farmville, Va., in 1981.

He was an avid recreational target shooter, golfer, and an autocross and drag race driver and enthusiast; hobbies and interests shared with his son, Christopher L. Riley. He loved animals and enjoyed bird watching and volunteering at the local Humane Society. He was a loyal, loving, and supportive father whose thirst for knowledge and intellectual challenges was never quenched.

He was preceded by his father, Paul H. Riley, and is survived by his mother, Glema E. Riley (Maupin), both of Crewe, Va.; wife, Kathy M. Riley (Lance) of Boise; sons Chris, a student at Boise State University and Sean P. Riley, a career Army journalist at Rock Island Arsenal, Ill.; daughter, Catherine L. Randolph of Williamsburg, Va.; and five grandchildren.
