Barbara (Barb / Barbie) Jones Scites, 80, of Ravenswood, West Virginia, passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease on January 29, 2022, at Morningstar Memory Care, in Boise, Idaho. Barbara was born Barbara Carol Kellenberger on September 14, 1941 to parents Helen Margaret Josephine Holmes Kellenberger and Louis Peter Kellenberger, and was raised in Dunbar, WV, with her older brother, Louis (II). Barbara married John R. Jones of Dunbar, WV, and had two children, David and Jennifer, in Huron, Ohio, and raised them in Ravenswood, WV. While Barb and John did not remain together, she met her last love there later, Kenneth "Jack" Scites; the two married and lived joyfully in their Ravenswood home until late in life when both moved into assisted living together in Gallipolis, Ohio.
While raising her children, Barbara went back to college and became a teacher, spending many happy years teaching grade school children at Gilmore Elementary in WV. During her adult and retired years, Barbie was an accomplished long-distance runner and golfer; she and Jack loved to golf at Greenhills Country Club, go to West Virginia University football games with friends, and visit their adult children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her travels in her life included Scotland for golf, a group bicycle-ride down the Northeastern Seaboard, South Carolina beaches, cross-country drives with Jack to visit family, the Oregon Coast, Florida countless times, and fun spots with grandkids like Disneyworld and Legoland. She and Jack spent many relaxing times at their vacation home in Fort Pierce, Florida.
Jack passed away in June 2020, with his sons’ families and Barbie by his side. Barbara soon after moved to Boise, ID, to a memory care home near her daughter, Jennifer. Barbara turned a milestone 80 years of age in September 2021, and her hospice team arranged a special outing for Barbie and her Boise family to the Boise City Zoo on a beautiful day in early October 2021.
Barbara was visited in her last days by her children, grandchildren, ex-husband, chaplains and caregivers, sharing love, prayers and gratitude for her life, love, and legacy. They and Barbie would want to share great appreciation for all the caregivers in the last years and days of her life, including the staff at Holzer Assisted Living in Gallipolis, Ohio, and Morningstar Memory Care and Keystone Hospice in Boise, Idaho.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Louis Kellenberger (WV), husband, Jack Scites (OH), and her brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Betsy Kellenberger (FL). She is survived by her children’s families, David Jones (Stephanie; Hayden, Landon, Anna) of Fairmont, WV and Jennifer Palagi (Riccardo; Mira, Stella Palagi; Michael, Chris & Eric Christensen) of Boise, ID; by step-sons Timothy J.(Bev) Scites of Gallipolis, OH and Eric Paul (Susan) Scites of Pomeroy, OH, along with their wonderful children and grandchildren; also by her brother Louis’ children (Cathy, Dave, Peter III, Brian) and their lovely families.
