Alf Waldemar Dahl, or known as Wally by his family, passed away on October 27, 2020 while living in the Idaho State Veteran’s Home in Boise, Idaho. Wally was born on October 8, 1935 in Astoria, Oregon, to Alf Edward Dahl, of Astoria, OR, and Edith Autio Dahl, of Negaunee, MI, the oldest of 4 brothers, Paul, Bill, and Roy. The Family moved to Walnut Creek, CA in 1948.
Alf had many adventures though out his life, right out of high school he rode his bike across europe with his brother Paul and cousin. He returned to the state for college and attended Oregon State University, earning an Associate’s Business Degree.
He honorably served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960 and was part of the 1 st Bagade, 16 th U.S. Infrantry Rangers.
After leaving the Army in 1960, Alf went to work with his father and brother’s at Dahl Automotive in Walnut Creek, CA. Alf met Sharon Anita Maloney shortly after threw their parents, they were married 12/8/1962 in Walnut Creek, CA. Where they lived until their 1 st child John was born: Afterward they moved to Dublin, CA where their second child Anita was born. In 1977, they bought Dahl Automotive out. Both Alf and his wife Sharon ran the shop & operations until 1985. Even John and Anita worked in the shop during summer breaks to help the family business. In 1987 they sold the shop and closed the doors on Dahl automotive. Alf worked at Rossmoor Homes in Walnut Creek for a shorttime before getting a position with Caltrans as a Lead Mechanic in 1990 and retired from the State of California.
He was also a proud lifetime member of the Benevolent and Protect Order of the Elks, joining Walnut Creek Lodge #1811 in 1965 and holding positions of leadership including the Exalted Ruler, following in his father’s and father-in-law’s footsteps. He was a good Elk!
They lived in Dublin for 30+ years before retiring to Longview WA in 2005. In 2009 Sharon passed due to complication of diabetes. In 2015 Wally moved to Boise, ID to live at the BOISE VA home and closer to his son.
Alf enjoyed time with family and traveling & biking. He was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Alf enjoyed a good book and Scotch.
He is proceeded in death by his wife Sharon A. Dahl in 2009, his brother’s Roy and William (Bill) Dahl, his mother Edith, or Ea, and his father Alf Edward.
Alf is survived by his Son, John Dahl and his wife Nancy of Boise, Idaho; his daughter, Anita and her husband Tom Kellogg, of Tracy California; 4 grandchildren: Jessica Dahl, Emilee Clark, Sarah Kellogg and Thomas Kellogg JR and one great grandchild. Along with one brother Paul Dahl of Woodinville, Washington.
A memorial will be held for family and friends to scatter his ashes in 2021 after Covid is over.
He will be deeply missed!
